PYM ON POPERY

“For it now appears that the religion of the papists is incompatible with any other religion; it is destructive to all others, and will endure nothing that opposes it. There are other religions that are not right, but not so destructive as popery, for the principles of popery are subversive of all states and persons that oppose it.” John Pym, one of the chief members of the English Parliament, House of Commons, 1641.

Statement of Faith-General Articles

We herein express a firm reliance upon the inspired word of God in the English language, the A.V. 1611 King James Bible (as found in the 1769 Cambridge Edition) as the final authority for all matters of faith, practice, and doctrine. We acknowledge that the aforesaid Bible is indeed a translation, but that by the providence of God the translation preserves the inspiration of the true and providentially preserved underlying Hebrew and Greek texts in such a manner as that the King James Bible should indeed be called “the Scriptures, the Scripture, the word of God, the words of the living God and the word of truth.” It is indeed the word of our salvation, showing men “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.” (1 Peter 1:23) The words contained therein “are spirit and life” (John 6:63b) and are “profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16) to such an extent that a man may by the word of God (the Cambridge King James Bible) in his hand and the Spirit of Christ within be led “into all truth” (John 16:13). “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path,” (Psalm 119:105) and “Thy word is true from the beginning, and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth forever.” (Psalm 119:160) We believe what the Bible says concerning itself, that “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.” (Psalm 119:89)

Being of certain understanding concerning the way of salvation, and that Jesus Christ is the Author and Finisher of our faith, we do hereby declare our belief in what are commonly called the doctrines of grace as preached in the Protestant Reformation, acknowledging that the Reformers were correct in identifying the Roman Pope as “that man of sin” (2 Thessalonians 2:3,4) and the city of Rome as “MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH,” (Revelation 17:5) and that she is the font of spiritual corruption amongst men upon the earth, being drunken with the blood of the saints and the martyrs of Jesus. All allegiance, loyalty, toleration or affinity with the Roman Catholic Church is here abjured, renounced, and declared to be sin. We believe: 1) That the entity described in Revelation chapters 17 and 18 is the city of Rome (Revelation 17:9, 18); 2) That the Roman Catholic religion which has its source in that city is the religion described in those chapters; 3) That the prophesied destruction of the said city in Italy is described of a spiritual entity with a physical seat (Revelation 18:10), ancient Babylon having been made “perpetual desolations” (Jeremiah 25:12) and as such will rise no more.

With the Protestant Reformers we agree concerning “the Jew after the flesh, the Hebrew, or the Israelite” is “beloved for the fathers’ sakes” (Romans 11:28) and as such the Gospel is to be preached to him as well as the Gentile. The Jew is to be offered a place of safety and protection, is not to be persecuted, and his descent and ethnic identity are not to be denied. Further, we as reject the modern teaching of the dispensationalist with its features of faulty exegesis of Daniel chapter 9 and Matthew 24, and many other Scriptures, knowing that these prophesies have been fulfilled.
We believe in the literal, physical return of the Lord Jesus Christ to the earth at a time known only to God the Father, (Acts 1:7, 11; Revelation 19:11-16) and that at such time his Omnipotence will be visibly evidenced and his saints shall be with him forever.

As Baptists in doctrine, we declare that there are no sacraments in Holy Writ, but rather two ordinances enjoined upon Christians, Baptism by immersion in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost, and the Lord’s Table. We acknowledge general adherence to the London Baptist Confession of 1689, differing with it only in that we declare the New Testament of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is the only rule of faith and practice for the Christian.

Further, we believe that the church of the living God is according to Holy Writ, the pillar and ground of the truth, assembled believers in subjection one to anther and in Scriptural order possessing an unction and understanding corporately that transcends the unction of any individual Pastor, teacher, or member of the body of Christ. We believe that Christ gave Christians one to another to encourage, admonish, pray for, instruct, and strengthen those of like precious faith, understanding that the children of God are his forever, that despite many failings, misapprehensions, and misunderstandings due to natural depravity, they are to continue in love and charity one to another, charity covering the multitude of sins, charity never failing.

About This Website

THE PURPOSE OF THIS WEBSITE

Welcome to this domain established with thanks to God for the purpose of preaching and teaching the pure Christian faith, founded by the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, the Word of God, the Savior of His people. This faith has been transmitted pure, intact, inviolate, infallible through all ages from the Creation because His word is pure, and His word is eternal, and His word is for ever settled in heaven and because He changes not. “Christianity Is Like Its Founder” This one, true faith transmitted without corruption, without change, without embellishment and undiminished can be found in the word of God, the Holy Scriptures as found complete in the English language in the King James Bible (Authorized Version of 1611) by those who have eyes to see and ears to hear by God’s grace. “Bible Truth”

The Lord Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and those who are chosen by God from before the foundation of the world to be His do not look for (or try to make) “another way”. “Believer’s Rule of Life”   They do not advance “another truth” or seek to twist or distort God’s truths to their temporal purposes. “The Victory Which Overcometh The World”    They do not hope for life, or that which sustains unto life everlasting, in anyone or anything other than the Lord. “Death Where Is Thy Sting”

The Christian faith, like its Founder, is a light shining in the darkness. It is a city on a hill which cannot be hid. This faith and all the truths concerning it – which this website will advance by God’s grace and Providence to the comfort and benefit of His Elect wherever they may be – is found in the AV1611 King James Bible, and is “the work of God”. “The Work of God”

This ministry will seek to be a witness (of grace unto the saints and of condemnation unto the reprobate) that this True, Pure, Holy, Christian Faith must always contrast with, stand apart from, and stand above other so-called “faiths”. “Christianity Stands Apart From All Else”   All false creeds err in the following ways:

* They seek to make the works of man (whatever they may be) effective in the work of salvation which the Lord Jesus Christ finished entirely by Himself by His life, death, and resurrection. “Christ Works Salvation Not Man”

* They pretend to make God’s will and sovereign power dependent or contingent in some way upon man’s will or cooperation. “Christ Has Won the Victory; His Righteousness Is Shown In the Sight of the Heathen”

* They diminish the almighty power of the Holy Spirit and attempt to elevate a man, group of men, or an institution to positions of necessity in their own right as the sources and dispensers of salvation and saving grace. “Damnable Creed Of The Unbeliever”

* They seek by syncretism and fornication with paganism (or any other religious practices) to incorporate rituals, decree dogmas, and bind laws which are not contained in the True Faith revealed in the word of God, nor can be part of that pure faith since they are idolatry, works of carnal man, and abominations in the sight of God. “Essential Christianity Unpolluted”

* They diminish the role of Jesus Christ as the one mediator between God and man by placing in His stead – or alongside Him as “Mediatrix” or “co-redeemer” or “intercessor” – the mother of the Lord or such other persons as men have elevated to such distinction and veneration contrary to God’s will and word. “Catholic Superstitions”

True Christianity, identified as it is with the Lord Jesus Christ, is an eternal faith. “Christianity Has Always and Will Always Live”  It has both flourished and seen persecution at different times throughout its history. Its nemesis - the institutional, papal, and imperial Church of Rome – drove it underground throughout the Dark Ages. But the pure seed of God’s truth ever thrived. “The Faith Is Preserved And Perseveres”  At the time of the Reformation it burst forth in its original glories. “All the Ends of the Earth Have Seen the Salvation of Our God”  It spread to all the nations of the earth; bringing benefits material and spiritual to the peoples of the planet. “Christianity Versus The Skeptics In History”   The quotes which follow give evidence of all these truths:

“Protestantism, before it became an establishment, was a refusal to live any longer in a lie. It was a falling back upon the undefined untheocratic rules of truth and piety which lay upon the surface of the Bible, and a determination rather to die than to mock with unreality any longer the Almighty Maker of the world. We do not look in the dawning manifestations of such spirit for subtleties of intellect. Intellect, as it ever does, followed in the wake of the higher virtues of manly honesty and truthfulness. And the evidences which were to effect the world’s conversion were no cunningly arranged syllogistic demonstrations, but once more those loftier evidences lay in the calm endurance by heroic men of the extremities of suffering, and which touched not the mind with conviction, but the heart with admiring reverence.” (pg.78)“They were armed, I say, with the truth. It was that alone which could have given them victory in so unequal a struggle. They had returned to the essential fountain of life; they reasserted the principle which had lain at the root of all religions, whatever their name or outward form, which once burnt with divine luster in that Catholicism which was now to pass away: the fundamental axiom of all real life, that service which man owes to God is not the service of words or magic forms, or ceremonies or opinions; but the service of holiness, of purity, of obedience to the everlasting laws of duty.” (pg.44,45) (History of England from The Fall of Wolsey to The Defeat of the Spanish Armada, by James Anthony Froude, M.A., published in London, 1870, by Longman’s)

“Nothing is more characteristic of Protestantism than its influence in promoting civil and religious liberty. Under its reign all forms of governments verge towards the democratic. “The king and the church” are exchanged for the “constitution and the people.” Liberty, not order, is the word that wakes the dead, and electrifies the masses. A social science is created, and the physical well being of the humblest laborer is cared for, and made a subject of deliberation in the councils of nations. Industry has received in Protestant countries it grandest development. Since the time of Luther, it has been performing one continued series of miracles. Every corner of the globe is explored; the most distant and perilous seas are navigated; manufactures, villages and cities spring up as by enchantment; canal and railroads are crossing the country in every direction; the means of production, the comforts, conveniences, and luxuries of life are multiplied to an extent hardly safe to relate. Such, in its most general aspect, in its dominant tendency, is Protestantism.” (pg. 23, Vol IV) (From THE WORKS OF ORESTES A. BROWNSON, COLLECTED AND ARRANGED BY HENRY F. BROWNSON, copyright 1883, self-published in Detroit in 1900)

“On the other hand, with the invention of printing, the cause of the Reformation takes a colossal stride in advance. A Bible, which, before, had cost five hundred crowns, now costs but five. The people acquire the power of reading God’s Word, or of hearing it read, for themselves. The light of truth dispels the clouds of superstition, as by a new revelation. The Pope and his monks are found to bear, very often, but faint resemblance to Jesus and his apostles. Moreover, the instinct of self interest sharpens the eye of the public. Many greedy priests, of lower rank, had turned shop-keepers in the Netherlands, and were growing rich by selling their wares, exempt from taxation, at a lower rate than lay hucksters could afford. The benefit of the clergy, thus taking bread from the mouths of the many. Excites jealousy; the more so, as, besides their miscellaneous business, the reverend traders have a most lucrative branch of commerce from which other merchants are excluded. The sale of absolutions was the source of large fortunes to the priests. The enormous impudence of this traffic almost exceeds belief. Throughout the Netherlands, the price current of the wares thus offered for sale, was published in every town and village. God’s pardon for crimes already committed, or about to be committed, was advertised according to a graduated tariff. Thus, poisoning, for example, was absolved for eleven ducats, six livres tournois. Absolution of incest was afforded at thirty-six livres, three ducats. Perjury came to seven livres and three cardines. Pardon for murder, if not by poison, was cheaper. Even a parricide, could by forgiveness at God’s tribunal for one ducat, four livres, eight carlines. Henry de Montfort, in the year 1448, purchased absolution for that crime at that price. Was it strange that a century or so of this kind of work should produce a Luther? Was it unnatural that plain people, who loved the ancient church, should rather desire to see her purged of such blasphemous abuses, than to hear of St. Peter’s dome rising a little nearer to the clouds on these proceeds of commuted crime?” (pgs. 71-72) Vol. I. (From THE RISE OF THE DUTCH REPUBLIC IN THREE VOLUMES, Motley, John Lothrop, New York, Harper and Brothers, 1865)

“The doctrine of justification itself, as preached by an Arminian, is nothing but the doctrine of salvation by works…I do not serve the god of the Arminians at all; I have nothing to do with him, and I do not bow down before the Baal they have set up; he is not my God, nor shall he ever be; I fear him not, nor tremble at his presence…The God that saith today and denieth tomorrow, that justifieth today and condemns the next…is no relation to my God in the least degree. He may be a relation of Ashtaroth or Baal, but Jehovah never was or can be his name.” – C.H. Spurgeon
